In business? Shop keeper or company director, most would agree that at some point during the life of your business, that advertising your products / service, is necessary and relevant.  Nowadays one has many options to choose from, local papers, local radio, national radio, papers and TV.  Also now we have the Internet as an option too. For the business  one expects and hope local people will support you, yes you will get a response initially by promoting yourself locally, but in time advertising to people who are aware of your business already........, simply doesn’t make sense financially.  Unless you live in a city or large town, where many people come and go, after a while advertising locally say in a rural area or a small town, one could say your money would be better spent promoting yourself further afield or by a different means.

You still have a problem! Because, most local media will be promoting your competition at the same time your advert may be running or that new customer you wish to attract may not buy the local paper or listen to the local radio or in some cases did not notice your advert among the many other adverts during your advertising campaign.

Why think local only?  Why only advertise for one night or a week?  Why advertise and pay good money only to be featured and listed with your competition?  Why be contented in being listed in a paper or publication and pay good money only to see on the same page, a major competitor with an advert that stands out more because it’s bigger, making your advert look small and insignificant?  Why keep on paying for local advertising, and accepting a poor response?  

Ok, costs of advertising used to be cheaper locally in the past, not so anymore.  Nowadays, businesses can find better deals advertising through the Internet. Most local businesses are looking to expand, whether by way of locations or customer footfall, the Internet is surely the option to now choose, so why do many local businesses who are now on the Internet and presumably wish to expand their customer base, are not promoting themselves beyond their local environment?..... Is the answer cost or they do not know how to?...  The answer is easy don’t think local, advertise nationally..... Advertise globally...... How?  Through us!!!

Like other main businesses, we knew we would not be able to solely survive within the local market, not just because of the the type of business we are in, as we know people in the entertainment industry, fashion, accommodation, food & drink, gifts, travel, car hire and introduction services, in fact the list of businesses and services could be endless.  We all have something in common the will to grow and be successful, we are sorry to say that very few are able to achieve this in some areas, especially in this financial downturn.  Question?  How many national or international businesses or very successful businesses do you see advertise in your local paper or are promoted on the local radio?  Answer, none or very very few.

A simple example:- A gentleman who owns a souvenir and gifts company in Dorset, has a shop in a busy street, early this year he remarked that his sales were down and he was finding it hard to survive.  He was recommended to promote his business on the Internet.   A web-site was designed for him to promote his products, not for the local market, but to be promoted throughout the UK and abroad.  Today that gentleman’s  business, 70% of his turnover is through the Internet, and 50% of that is outside the UK.  In fact, he sells more from his store room than the front of his shop, and now is considering with the recent rise in his overheads to simply trade from his storeroom.  Whatever your views, it is a fact that small shop keepers or businesses are finding it hard, OVERHEADS, RENTS, ADVERTISING COSTS, RECESSION or simply not enough paying customers coming through your door.  Maybe it’s time for a different way of business, through a different way of advertising.....
